
Obituary of Don Bowie, Sr.
Don Bowie, 89, departed this life on January 21, 2025. He was a native of McCoal, Mississippi. Upon graduating from Greenlee High School in 1955, Don enlisted in the US Navy where he served proudly retiring after 20 years. He was a Vietnam Veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in battle. Following his military service, Don went on to work at both Perry Buick, where he was recognized multiple times for his skills as a salesman, and the Norfolk Sheriff’s Department.
In 1971, he married the love of his life, Essie Brinkley Bowie. Essie and Don spent the next 53 years traveling, entertaining friends and sharing a love for each other.
Don was a devoted Christian and member of Fellowship United Church of Christ. There he was member of the Male Usher Board, and served on the Kitchen Ministry, and the Board of Trustees.
Left cherishing Don’s memory are: His loving wife, Essie, his daughter, Neverlyn, a son, Don Jr., and two grandsons, Brandon and Arron, a sister, E. Marie Youngblood (Fred), a sister-in-law Evelyn (V. Wayne) Orton and brother-in-law Howard Dabney. He will also be missed by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
