David Scott "Scott" McKenzie Obituary

With full hearts, we celebrate the life of David Scott McKenzie, (known simply and lovingly as "Scott" to family, friends and colleagues) who passed peacefully on June 11, 2025, at 7:28 a.m. "real time", surrounded by loving family in the comfort of his own home.

Born in Perkin, Illinois, Scott lived a life grounded in service, compassion and unwavering dedication to others. A proud Navy Senior Chief Medical Corpsman (HMC), he served with honor for 27 years, including time abroad the hospital ship Santuary during the Vietnam war. During his years as a Navy recruiter, Scott was also actively involved in the Boy Scouts, mentoring young men with the same care and dedication he gave to his country. He later served as a submariner corpsman, continuing to provide care and leadership deep beneath the sea. "Doc", as he was known in the Navy, was always ready to help and made those around him feel safe, heard, and valued.

After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Scott continued his lifelong mission of service through education. Using his degree from the University of Illinois, he became a devoted teacher with Virginia Beach Public Schools. His impact extended well beyond the classroom, as he mentored students and teachers across school districts in both Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Even after retiring from the school system, Scott remained a guiding light in the lives of many; continuing as a tutor and mentor, and truly an educator in the truest sense of the word.

Scott was also a gifted artist, a longtime youth sports coach, and a familiar, friendly prescence during his years working at Lynnhaven Mall. Whether coaching, teaching, painting, or simply listening, Scott brought heart and humanity to everything he did.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years; Rosemarie McKenzie, his children; Kevin (Gina) and their children; Ryan and Allyson, David (Angie) and their daughter Violet, and Jean (Dave) and her children; Emily and Jacob. He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers; Ken (Marge) and Michael (Eileen), and his sister Becky (Marie).

Scott also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends, each of whom were touched by his generosity, sense of humor, and steady prescence. He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend-steadfast, wise and endlessly kind. His legacy of love, service, and quiet stregnth will live on in all who had the blessing of knowing him.

A celebration of Scott's life will be held at a later date. Details to follow.
