After 39 years Charles retired as an Elementary School Physical Educator, Virginia Beach City Public Schools. During his tenure he also taught at the Center for Effective Learning.
Charles gave his life to Christ at an early age. He and his family were long-time members of St. John A.M.E. Church. He later joined his wife in membership at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Male Usher. He used his gift of singing as a member of the church’s Male Chorus. For special services he also sang with the Male Chorus of the Historic First Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA. He also sang in the community and at other churches with the Gentlemen of Distinction. Charles was recognized by his church as the 2013 Man of the Year.
Charles was a cherished and devoted member of the Lambda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He provided unwavering service and brotherhood and stood on the threshold of receiving his well-earned Fifty-Year Service Award. In March 2019 Charles was awarded “The Unsung Hero Award” by the South Hampton Roads Pan Hellenic Council, a testament to his enduring commitment, service and love for the fraternity.
Throughout his tenure, Charles was known not only for his active participation in numerous chapter committees but also for the warmth and wisdom he brought to every gathering. His culinary talents were legendary, his humor infectious, and his advice always thoughtful and sound. He was a pillar of fellowship and a source of joy to the brotherhood. Recently, Charles became especially known for singing the solo stanza of the fraternity’s hymn, “Omega Dear.” His voice, rich with emotion and pride, will echo in the hearts of his brothers for years to come.
In addition to his love of God, family and his fraternity Charles had a passion for volunteering with the Special Olympics. In 1997 the Special Olympics organization presented Charles with an appreciation award for his service and support. He was also a member of MOAC (Men of Achievement and Culture).
