Walter Lee "WaltLee" Lindsay, Sr. Obituary

The world changes from year to year, and our lives can change from day to day, but the love and memory of our loved ones will never pass away.

Our beloved Walter Lee “WaltLee” Lindsay, Sr., 82, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, at home, in the presence of his daughter Lisa and Son-in-Law Larry.

Walter was a devoted husband to his wife, Olivia (deceased), a loving and dedicated father and grandfather, and a guiding light to his family.  His wisdom, gentle strength, and warm, deep laughter were a constant presence and comfort. As a grandfather, he was never short on sharing stories, a hug, encouragement, and showing up at school events, church programs, dance recitals, or just to lend an ear. He loved his family, his siblings, nieces, nephews, friends, Church family, and his “Brothers”, always wanting to know if everyone was coming along okay, calling, checking on them, even in his time of challenge.

Walter filled our lives with a love for God, humor, a love of music, sports, dance, community, history, seafood, and unwavering support.

Walter, son of the late George Alfred and Lillie Mae Lindsay Sr., was a pillar of strength, service, and compassion. A military veteran, he faithfully served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, with two deployments in the Vietnam War. He served his country with honor, discipline, and a total commitment, earning him several awards, medals, and commendations. His time in uniform shaped the man he became - a leader, a protector, and a mentor to many over the years.

Walter’s lifelong love for sports began at 13 years old, with a passion for baseball. In fact, in his youth, he began coaching young players,  teaching them not only the game,  but also the values of teamwork, respect, and perseverance. He also loved Track, running track at Booker T. Washington High School, earning a letter and accolades for his performance. His impact on the field echoes through generations, as many of the young lives he touched through coaching went on to become leaders in their own right. It also led Walter to continue to serve as a coach, coaching a winning United States Navy Basketball team while stationed in Pennsylvania, as well as Little League football, baseball, and tee ball when returning to Virginia.

He was also a Cleveland Browns Fan!!!!!

Walter, following in the footsteps of his Grandfather and  Dad, was a Proud Member of the Prince Hall Masons Unity Lodge #93, coming up through the ranks to serve as Worshipful Master/Past Worshipful Master. He loved his “brothers” and always encouraged them to serve with respect and honor, and to learn and know the things that they were required to operate in excellence. He led by example, memorizing, never reading, the Burial Ceremony.

However, of all that has been mentioned, Walter Loved the Lord!  Truly, he did!

Daily, for as long as he could, he would read his Bible or one of his scripture-based books. He would listen to faith-based tapes, watch ministries online, or just recite scriptures out loud. He was excited, looked forward to being able to see his Church, his Church Family on Sunday mornings, calling out those whom he remembered, and saying, “ Go ‘head Gatling”, “Sing choir”.

A man of faith and service, Walter, who grew up from a “babe” in Ebenezer, served as Chairman of the Ebenezer Baptist Church Trustee Board, helping whenever and wherever else he could, letting his integrity, leadership dedication, and all that God instilled in him be used. For this, God saw fit that he would later be elevated and known as Elder Walter Lindsay Sr., bestowed upon him by Pastor Perez Gatling, the Board, and Church Family.

Walter Lee Lindsay Sr. lived a life of purpose, humility, and love. He believed in service above self and in always doing the right thing, even when no one was watching. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the family he raised, and the community he helped build.

He is deeply missed and will forever be remembered.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: His Children, Tondala Coefield (Kenneth), Lisa Lindsay-Shaw (Larry), Walter Lindsay Jr. (wife Dara - deceased). Grandchildren, Larisa Shaw, Kaia Lindsay, Joi Belton-Summerville, and Dontavious Myrick. Great-Grandchildren, Darion, Dorian, Shy’ra, Harmony Myrick, Joyce Wright, Nyesha Pope. Brother-in-Laws Alfred Driver (Norma), Albert Driver, Goddaughter Veronica Kelly (Antonio), God Granddaughter Moya Calloway. His siblings, George  Lindsay Jr., Jerome Lindsay (Arnetha), Michael K. Lindsay (Lorna), Margaret L. Morris (Richard), Christine Lee, Harriet Gordon, and a host of awesome cousins, nieces, nephews, loving family members, and friends.

Special, Sincere, Heartfelt THANK YOU to all the Family, Church Families, and Friends who prayed, called, and visited often; it meant the world to him. Praise GOD for our Family group chat, which kept him in the loop. He loved all the shares and knowing how his family was doing. Min. Margo Wilson, Thank You for faithfully visiting and fellowshiping, bringing Dad some of his favorite foods,  Pastor Joseph Ricks, who made sure he came and checked on “his daddy” on a regular basis, bringing him homemade ice cream and popsicles.

Thank You to all healthcare professionals on Dad's journey.

Fair winds and following seas, Walter. Your mission is complete. Rest well, sailor.

Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Thank You, Miss You, We Love You!
