Tuesday, October 15, 2025, Patricia Crockett (known as Pat and affectionately called Patti by
close family members) peacefully went into the arms of the Lord while in the home with
family. Pat was born on January 21, 1950, to Luke Hunter and Lucille (Towns) Hunter in
Columbus, Ohio. At the age of 10, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and baptized
at Family Missionary Baptist Church.
Pat graduated from Eastmoor High School. During her high school years, she met Jonathan
Mills; they fell in love and married. Through their union, two beautiful daughters (Jo Anna
Rena and Jacqueline Yvette) were born. Her employment began at the Kroger Commercial
Bakery in downtown Columbus until she temporarily moved to Illinois. In Chicago, she
worked at her cousin’s clothing and boutique shop. Upon her return to Columbus, she
worked at Lazarus Department Store. In 1973, Pat obtained employment with the federal
government as a civil service worker. She met Eugene Clayton and through their relationship
a beautiful daughter (Jemeca) was born.
In 1985, Pat experienced the unexpected loss of her daughter, Jackie. In the same year, she
re-dedicated her life to Christ and joined Gospel Light House Church. While working for the
federal government, Pat earned a cosmetology license from the Ohio State School of
Cosmetology. Although Pat was a single parent, she decided to become a foster parent.
In 1995, when the federal government downsized, Pat relocated with her department to the
Naval Station (NAVSTA) in Norfolk; locally known as NOB. Once she settled in Virginia
Beach, she became a member of Agape Church, currently known as Turning Point. In 1996,
she became a foster parent in the City of Virginia Beach. Christian (also known as Chrissy)
was one of the first children that Pat cared for. In 1998, she obtained a part-time position with
the company Community Alternatives to assist adults with disabilities. In 2001, she seized the
opportunity to adopt Chrissy. After 39 years, Pat retired from the federal government and
eight years later, she decided to move in with her daughter and son-in-law, Jemeca and
Karlis.
Pat was active in many church ministries which included: the prison, hospitality, homeless
and family ministries. She participated in a short term missions trip to Haiti. Her involvement
in community included: mentoring young mothers; assisting parents with children in the foster
care system; coaching double dutch; and working at voting polls. She served on the PTA
Board and was a Federal Employee Union Representative. Pat advocated for children;
elderly; disabled and those less fortunate. She committed her life to serving others in any
way she was capable. Pat always encouraged her daughters by encouraging them to “Step
out on faith and trust God,” a lifestyle she actively lived. Everything Pat did, she did it for he
glory of God.
