Rolanda Gillis Scriven Obituary

Rolanda A. Scriven, 55, of Clinton, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at home.


Born on August 18, 1970, in Northhampton County, VA, she was the daughter of Della Zenobia Gillis and the late Paul Calvin Gillis.


 


Rolanda earned her Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from Norfolk State University in 1993, her Master of Science in Education with a specialization in Special Education from Old Dominion University in 2007, and her Master of Science in Information Technology with a focus on Cyber Security from Walden University in 2017. She also completed additional coursework toward Early Childhood Certification at Arcadia University in 2010.


 


Rolanda dedicated more than two decades of her life to education as a Special Education Teacher, serving students in Wake County Public Schools (Raleigh, NC), Suffolk Public Schools (Suffolk, VA), Philadelphia Public Schools, and Fairfax County Public Schools, where she most recently served as the Special Education Department Chair at Franconia Elementary School, after being an Autism Teacher in the Enhanced Autism Program. Throughout her career, she designed and managed Individualized Education Plans, provided inclusive classroom instruction and behavior support, and served as Special Education Department Chair and Reading Lead. Earlier in her career, she worked as a Deputy Clerk for the Norfolk Circuit Court and the Wake County District Court. Rolanda also drew on her technical expertise as a self-employed Information Technology Consultant, helping others troubleshoot computer issues, build websites, and gain confidence with technology.


 


Rolanda was known for her love of family and friends, while bringing the “fun” to almost any situation.  Her leadership style encompassed professionalism, efficiency, and approachability.  Rolanda enjoyed reading, travelling, and attending New Edition concerts.  Rolanda was steadfast in her faith and cherished God’s goodness by exclaiming, “Won’t He do it!”


 On September 15, 2012, she married Curtis Scriven in Alexandria, VA.   Together they shared 13 years of marriage, and she became a bonus Mom to Nicholas Scriven.


Rolanda was a devoted member of Alfred Street Baptist Church, where she once volunteered in the Faye Savage Gunn Tutoring Ministry.


 


She is survived by her husband, Curtis Scriven, Nicholas Scriven (Bonus Son), Della Z. Gillis (Mother), Ramona A. Gillis (Sister), English & Christine Scriven (Father & Mother- In-Law), Derrick & Sandra Dantzler (Brother & Sister-in-Law), uncles, cousins, and dearly beloved Godchildren.


She was preceded in death by her father, Paul C. Gillis.
