Obituary of Hannelore Busch Rader

Hannelore passed away peacefully on April 25th, 2024, at the age of 86. She was born in Berlin, Germany on December 19th, 1937, to Talia E. and H. Heinrich Busch. She survived war as a child, followed by a challenging emigration from East Germany to Brazil and ultimately to the United States. She and her parents, sponsored and supported by relatives, arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1954 to start their new lives. She became a U.S. citizen, finished high school, and went on to earn multiple university degrees to include three Master’s degrees.
She met Roger F. Rader, a law student, while attending the University of Michigan as an undergraduate student. They fell in love and married in Ann Arbor in 1960, and eventually welcomed their daughter, Ingrid, into the world. Roger died in 1967, while still in his 30’s.
Hannelore was a strong and passionate mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She fought hard for the things she believed in and valued her U.S. citizenship immensely. She pursued many interests throughout her life, loved to travel, and always had high energy.
She had a very successful career in library science to include working at the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Cleveland State University and culminating with her position as Dean of Libraries at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a leader in her profession, who served as a role model to many and mentored countless young people throughout her career. She also taught evening adult education language classes and served as a Girl Scout Leader.
Hannelore was preceded in death by her mother, Talia, and her father, Heinrich, and is survived by her daughter Ingrid, granddaughter Kirstin, great-granddaughter Audrey, and many cousins.
