Joe and I have been in the NIMMO choir for years. He was always in my left as we sing as our three tenors (other one is Gene). My wife and I have won the prize on several occasions to stay in his cabin in NC. Joe is sadly missed, as I used his voice to tune mine. We both served in our beloved Navy and shared that bond, usually in quiet. People like Joe make life worth living. Joe - we miss you. We’ll keep an eye on Nancy for you… your friend, Charles

I can’t think of a kinder man… My husband and I met him when we were in college with Joe’s son, Daryl. We would come home with Daryl to visit and stay with his mom and dad. Joe & Nancy were like second parents to us.
When I think of Joe, I remember his soft, kind smile with that dose of humor. Always.
I can’t imagine a world without Joe Schaedel. He will be so missed.
So much love to you, Nancy and family.
Mike and Gigi

Joe was not only a beautiful artist but also a beautiful soul. His life story itself was a work of art, full of grace and warmth. To me, he was like a father figure in the USA, always greeting me with a big smile and a warm hug. He never showed a sad face and consistently offered kindness, sweetness, and encouraging words.
Joe was a gifted painter, writer, and reader. His talents extended beyond the visual and written arts—he was also an amazing singer. For his 90th birthday, I brought a karaoke mic, and he sang for a room full of guests. I will never forget his face or his voice that day. I miss his calm and sweet voice deeply.
Opa, Joe, I will always cherish your voice and your smile. I will hold Nancy’s hands tightly in your place, giving her all the love and support you would have given. You will forever be in my heart. I love you.

Two of my most recent memories of my time with my special cousin were first when my brother, sister and I visited him and Nancy in Virginia Beach. We all toured his wonderful aviation museum and had such fun hearing about the Schaedel family history. My most recent visit was with my son where I fulfilled my one bucket list desire to fly with the birds and see God’s amazing world from the tops of the trees! His view now is somehow better than mine now and I look forward to enjoying that view with him in the heavenly heights! Joe was one of the most humble, loving and God honoring men I have ever known. Well done God’s faithful servant!
Sending heartfelt prayers to Nancy and his precious family.

No one could have a greater cousin than Joe. My first great memory was his invitation to dinner at the officer’s club in D.C. back in the 70’s. A memory I will always cherish. Then several visits with he and Nancy in Virginia Beach. He was always so kind to the boys and they absolutely loved their visits to the Air Museum. They had the best guide ever!!! We shared so many laughs and Tom loved talking war stories with him. He was a great man and wonderful friend. He will be deeply missed, but we can rejoice as he is with our Savior and we will be seeing him again!!!

Opa loved bluebirds. He gave a bluebird house to me and Scott. He told us all about how to set it up, and how to protect the birds.
He loved dessert. If there were multiple options he’d have a little of each. I think I get that from him.
He had his quirks. He’d been known to eat a slice of cheddar cheese on apple pie and cut up a piece of pizza with a fork and knife. He’d take a bar of soap with him when he went for a swim in the river, for efficiency’s sake.
He cared about me. When I went to visit him in Virginia Beach or at the river, he was always happy to see me. When I went off to bed he wished me sweet dreams and told me he hoped “the bed bugs wouldn’t bite.” In the morning he would ask how I slept. He would also often ask me what my shirt said. I remember coming down one morning at the river and having to explain the band Death Cab for Cutie to him. As a teenager I was annoyed, but now sometimes I read my students’ shirts to come up with things to talk about with them, and I feel bad for being annoyed.
He was an artist. He made a cool “Schädel Strasse” sign for Megan. I said I wanted one and he made me one that said “Klaus Haus,” after my dog, Klaus. There’s a baby picture of me that still has a paper doll bob haircut he drew and cut out to put over my bald head. He told me once he made a flash sheet of tattoos when he was stationed overseas and, as a joke, sent them to his mom and told her to pick one for him to get. She freaked out — he said he forgot to put that it was a joke on the card. I wish I could see the designs he drew. I wish I could have seen more of his art.
When I got married, he let me wear the pearls he bought for his mother while he was overseas.
When I last saw him, I brought lots of desserts from a Greensboro bakery. He ate the salted malted brownie with ice cream, and the snickerdoodle with apple butter with breakfast. He said they were delicious.
I’ll always remember him sitting at the dining room table, enjoying a delicious meal, and laughing. I’ll remember his hugs and his love. I’ll always miss him.

If all of our neighbors had half of Joe's warmth, friendship and caring we would be a nation of peace, unity and harmony. We miss him terribly but know he is with his God. Rest in well deserved peace Joe!

I decided to have Joe and Nancy as my "adoptive parents" about 10 years ago. (They probably had second thoughts about adopting a 56-year-old, but accepted me into the family anyway. :-)
Since then, I have since spent many an enjoyable hour with them both and have worked countless hours with Joe at the museum. (Here's Joe in the back seat of the museum's P-51 Mustang.) I had the privilege of getting "Pop" set up in the back seat for his hop at the museum's volunteer day a couple of years ago. A kinder, more good hearted man never walked the earth and I miss him very much. Fair winds and following seas, Pop. Ed Dillingham

Joe was a Brother Lion, and it was a huge honor to call him my dear friend as well. He seemed to never tire. He kayaked with his exchange students in Back Bay...He rounded us up early on Saturdays for our Highway Pickup projects. He ran the Childs vision screening program for years earning our Club award after award. Joe was the ultimate Servant. He was a joy to be with. A great storyteller, and just a really nice man. He loved his Nancy and was so proud of his family. I know you all will miss him. How lucky you were to have him. How lucky were we all. Rest easy Joe. Love you.

My favourite memory of Joe (and Nancy) was the first time we met at the Baseball field, watching Tanner and Andrew play, talking about your time in England. Joe was full of stories of the wonderful time spent in England and the friends you made. It always made me happy to hear the encouragement from Joe on the bleachers for his grandsons. May you rest in peace. We know your spirit will be with Tanner and Kenny at the field. Love to you Nancy, and all the family.

Such a kind, gentle, thoughtful neighbor.
Although we did not see he and Nancy often, we could never forget his tribute to his comrades in the Navy that he always placed flags in the yard for on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He always saluted them and had a "word" for each of them.
