God blessed me by giving me Melanie to be my guardian angel. I graduated at 23 and found a job 8 hours away in a whole new state where I knew no one. Melanie was kind enough to let me stay with her while I found a place to live. I found a very nice place, and after 6 months of living on my own I was broke, homesick, and lonely. Melanie offered to let me rent a room off of her. She was always so selfless., so caring, and so giving. I was too young to truly appreciate the amazing sacrifices she made for me over those 4 years of teaching in VA. I loved my 4 years living with her and am so grateful for all that she had done for me. I wasn’t the easiest to live with since I was still very immature. She was an excellent cook. And Mary her Mother became another Grandma to me. I also learned to love dogs, and fell in love with her dogs, Snickers and Bourban. My husband and I have raised 4 children, and I owe a lot to her for the mother and teacher that I have become. Thank you Melanie! I know the angel that you have become in heaven can hear me!!!! I had the pleasure of working collaboratively with Melanie when she was a teacher, a department chair, and as a Dean of Students. We worked together to revise and edit mathematics curriculum and units for teachers to use across the district. Melanie was a consummate professional and was extremely creative. When I became the district coordinator, Melanie was chosen as department chair at Lake Taylor and attended a math conference with me in West Virginia. She was a wonderful traveling partner and was so eager to learn and share math tips with others. I will always remember sitting in her office, looking at math materials, or simply having a conversation about our lives. We shared a lot in her office, sometimes even personal information, and she was always willing to share her stash of pretzels with me. I remember her loving care and compassion for her mother during her illness. I admired and adored my friend Melanie and respected her professionalism and commitment to the students in Norfolk.
