It was truly heart aching when I heard of Coach Eldridge's passing. He was truly a good man who gave so many of us wrestlers such a great opportunity. He inspired me to go into coaching and likewise my sons who have gone on into coaching. I am truly blessed to have had the privileged of knowing him. Rest in peace my friend.

Passing my condolences to the Pat and Jeff. It is so true that Steve (Coach) had a profound impact on all his students and athletes. I still swap stories with classmates about our adventures with Steve – in the wrestling room, on road trips, out at his place, and hay baling a field up in Heath, MA. We still use his favorite phrase: “Let’s motor, men!” His enthusiasm and encouragement helped me grow personally and as an athlete and I continue to carry his memory with me. I also appreciated his good sense of humor and pragmatism within the Coast Guard Academy ecosystem that didn’t approach things the same way. He made the team a special place – away from the pressures of the Academy environment – that I remember fondly.

Coach Eldridge had a big impact on my life. He welcomed women onto the Cross Country team (back when other coaches were still excluding us) and then formed a Women's Cross Country Team. Sports have such a big impact on cadet life and cross country instilled in me a love of running and spurred my competitive spirit. The team was a refuge from the stress of the barracks as Coach Eldridge both challenged us and supported us. He helped generations of cadets develop their bodies and their character.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

My deepest sympathies to Pat and his family. Steve was a wealth of knowledge, when it came to Arabian horse pedigrees.

As 1964 Class Correspondent, I sent the following message to classmates when forwarding the Alumni Association's notice of his passing:
Classmates: I received the message below from the Alumni Association this afternoon.
I can tell you from personal experience that Steve was a class act all around. He was a faculty member at CGA when I taught math there '69 to '73, and also 1982-1984 when I was CO, VIGOROUS, homeported at CGA .
As you'll see in his obituary, Steve was on the CGA faculty, and coached wrestling and cross country for 47 years! He not only coached and taught, but mentored and followed the careers of hundreds of cadets who came his way over nearly a half century of service to the Academy, the Coast Guard, and his country. A fine man whose contributions to our alma mater were immense.

I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to Pat, Jeff and the Eldridge family.
Coach was one of the strongest influences in my time at CGA. A truly great man who loved his role in bringing out the best in everyone he coached.

Ave atque Vale…Hail and Farewell
Coach arrived at the Academy the same time I did…I wasn’t a wrestler but he had an immediate impact on my life-then and throughout my life. He was a great man and I’ll miss him.

My sincere condolences to the Eldridge family on the passing of coach. Coach Eldridge was my friend, coach and mentor. . Just great memories of watching the academy wrestling team while in high school, wrestling for Steve and his team at the academy and then against him after I had left. And then 35 years later later when my own son was wrestling in college and Steve was still there standing tall in their corner taking close care of his athletes. He was always more than a coach to me and I will never forgot what he did for me personally as a developing young man who was looking for direction in life. He was always "in my corner"

I’m very sorry for your loss. Steve was a great coach and leader and role model for all he came in contact with at CGA. I found him to be a coach who was well prepared and organized and a terrific motivator to cadets. Subsequently, as a faculty member, I found to be an excellent colleague who treated us all very well with professionalism and humor. He will be greatly missed. A true gentleman!
