I remember Ed and Retha with great fondness and gratitude, and I am certainly but one of the many now-adults for whom in our childhood their warmth and acceptance and encouragement and kindness helped make it bearable and acceptable and even good to be ourselves. I remember that Ed’s voice had a tone that sounded to me always on the verge of a chuckle, and talking to him he seemed interested in what you had to say because he was interested in you and you mattered to him – and more, he was interested in the wide world and he took delight in it, and his delight and interest made the world itself seem more interesting. Leading the church youth group for many years, Ed gave us something long ago that was rare and that has proved inestimably valuable and seems to me now nearly miraculous: he showed us how to think for ourselves about the most complicated spiritual and moral and conceptual matters. By his gentle questions that tested our received certainties and adolescent assurance, he made us defend our ideas with both scriptural reference and good reasons so that we might learn to inhabit the truth and that it might live in us. (And he and my father, his friend, both gave witness to the truth that if it isn’t in Love, then it isn’t of God, and by their fruits you’ll know them.) And so, sitting downstairs around a wooden table in an old, converted barn Ed led a group of teenagers in a scripture-tethered Socratic dialogue about what is good and beautiful and true; which is to say, about Love; which is to say, about God and God’s shining love. And it was that Love that I remember we saw in Ed and that Love that Ed shone for us.

Q: How would you describe Edwin to someone who had never met them?
A: God’s chosen Rebel with his spiritual adventure team :
Solomon for his wisdom
Samson for his strength
Moses for his direction
Abraham for his leadership, and
Noah for his determination !
Ed was my Pop’s as I called him, my godfather. Richard and Ed saved my life as a teen & changed it forever. He is still with me in spirit. His family sacrificed much for his church family. We love and respect each of you for letting us have a piece of him and momma Retha’s heart ❤️. I give thanks to God for the living tree of life that Pops was to all he loved, touched, & showed his humanity to. Those of us that our lives were touched through him through out the years. For most to all of his family for their love and kindness in sharing this enduring man with us. Be still my ❤️ Blessings Always Mary Terwilliger Desalvo

The Lord took one of my best friends home. I met Ed back
In the 80's, @ Trinity Tabernacle (The Barn). Ed didn't know
Any strangers. He made you feel comfortable also. I
accompanied Ed as he was the Youth Leader at church.
He would coordinate with the teens about setting dates
Throughout the year for: camping, hiking, snow skiing,
Roller skating, ect.
His goal was to keep the teens involved with these
Activities so that they in return, would bring their friends
To church. This really worked out, because the youth
Group increased. Remember, JESUS CHRIST worked
In multiples...Prase God!!
As for Ed, the Lord gave him great blessings for that.
Their are still a great number of those teens, (adults
Now), that kept in touch with him throughout his years.
Remember, bring up a child in Christ and they shall never
Depart from the knowledge of it. I believe the Lord gave
Ed a great number of years for his good works. Ed's
Spirit will forever be etched in my heart.
My condolences & prayers go out to the family.
Thank you for sharing this great man..GOD BLESS you all
Your brother in Christ, Richard Creef

I take heart in remembering many of the adventures I shared with Eddie Townes over the years. Photo one is from October 21, 2000, year three of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Family Fun Day on the Bay. Ed got me back into bike riding several years before this by biking around Newport News Park and Yorktown, setting the stage for this adventure years later. Starting in 1998, this bike ride was to be a once in a lifetime event as they were about to open the second bridge span of the CBBT bridge and tunnel complex. However, it was so popular that it became a yearly event until 2004. I managed to go all seven years. All but one of those years included Ed by my side. The only reason he missed the event in 2002 was that the date conflicted with his family reunion. I am so thankful for those times and the memories I now have to cherish. Even though the bike rides faded into history as time moved on, we still got together on a regular basis for other types of outings and adventures, many of which ended up in getting BBQ. One trip to try out a BBQ place in Windsor, NC (photos two and three) took quite a bit longer to get to than I had expected, but also ended up with one of the funnier stories Ed had laughed about since. It was on that trip that, after pouring Texas Pete hot sauce on his BBQ, he learned that Texas Pete actually made an extra hot, hot sauce, which is what he happened to put on his BBQ. Thank you Ed for the memories, the mentorship, and for being a positive influence in my life. I also cherish the times I have had to share with members of your family. Many of whom I felt have become members of my family. Your presence in this life will be sorely missed, but I know I shall see you again in the "land that is fairer than day." (The remaining photos are from just a few of the great times spent with friends and family.)

I’ll never forget sitting in ICU in Green Bay WI as my husband Gary lay dying from the cancer that consumed his body when I received a phone call from our dear friend Ed who said he had a gift to send to us. It was a painting of “The Barn” Trinity Tabernacle done by one of his youth group kids. My heart was so overwhelmed . When I returned to Gary and told him tears rolled down his face . We both felt such love and thankful we were not forgotten . The next day Gary was well enough to come home and lived two more years. I am convinced Ed saved Gary’s life that day. After Gary’s death I received many calls from Ed . He never minded how long I would keep him on the phone; sometimes 3 hours. I remember one call he said “ Jenny, the sun was out when I called you now it’s dark” lol. Oh to have been loved on this earth by Ed is a treasure. If Ed knows you he loves you. I can just see Ed and Gary praising our Lord at the feet of Jesus. I’m sure Gary told him “I told you Jenny can talk”

Ed was a friend for 40+ years. I live in St. Louis now and return to Tidewater a couple of times a year to visit friends. A highlight of my visits is to go to Ed’s home in Corapeake with our friend Bill Davidson and then have dinner at Q-Daddys BBQ, one of Ed’s favorite places. Ed’s passing will hit home when I return to Tidewater in the spring. He will be missed.
