Looking back to almost 20 years ago, as a young active duty military navy family reassigned from Naples, Italy back to the US and searching for a church home, amongst other things on a to-do-list, we recall that Steven Bowman Sr. was one of many who welcomed us into the fold of Victory Life Church with his warm smile and endearing personality. He went out of his way checking to see how we were settling back in the area and even invited us to his home. We continued to associate with him as Victory Life Church melded with New Life Church at the then new Kempsville Campus and as our families grew closer and closer, he became "Uncle Steve" to us-a part of our family away from family!
We have vivid memories doing life together with Uncle Steve such as experiencing life group at his home, hanging out with him and his family at outdoor church events like the "Holy Ghost Wiener Roast" alternative to Halloween, or church services and picnics held in area parks, prepping up and participating in Christmas Season open house at his home, Thanksgiving dinners, birthday and graduation celebrations. He was quite the chef and we all eagerly anticipated the fare he would prepare especially his signature mouth-watering slow-cooked barbecued ribs and delicious venison hamburger patties-Mmm, Mmm! This was then polished off with slices of various yummy cakes baked by the love of his life, Selece!
With him being an avid hunter and lover of fishing, we were also beneficiaries of the game and fish that kind and generous Uncle Steve came back with be it deer, wild turkeys or bass. Daniel also greatly enjoyed the hunting trips they took together and fellowshipped with him during the rides to the hunting grounds by taking along sermon tapes/CDs to play and listen to with him in the truck.
We always looked forward to these various gatherings and ways of doing life together whether it was just our two families together or with more guests present praying together or connecting in other ways as mentioned. He was always on hand to regale us with entertaining stories from his youth -growing up in the D.C. area; hunting and fishing stories or some masterfully negotiated tree-cutting deal in his backyard that he had accomplished. There was also some artful teasing and gentle ribbing of others for the taking from Uncle Steve whenever the opportunity presented which provoked hearty laughter all around! Last but not least, one could count on Uncle Steve for great and practical advice on almost anything one could name-from how to weather a wooden deck correctly to how to fix a lawn mower and the right mix of fuel needed to operate it-something that was much appreciated by a navy wife at home with young kids and her sailor out to sea from time to time!
We will sorely and dearly miss our "Uncle Steve" but we know that we can always go take a stroll down a much cherished Memory Lane where he lives on in our hearts. We take solace in knowing that he is at peace and enjoying a full rest in the Lord and with that knowledge, we have purposed not to grieve as though we were without hope but to take heart as we look forward to seeing him again......

Steve was my older Brother and Partner in Crime for many years. I miss and love you. One of my favorite memories was when our mother told stories about how I was always following Steve into trouble so I was there to get him out. She looked up one day to realize I was the one leading him into trouble and he was the one getting Me out. We fought with each other but mostly for each other. If you messed with one you messed with both. Nobody messes with my brother but ME!. My heart breaks and rejoices at the same time. Rest in Peace Grid! Until we meet again. #His Eye is on the Sparrow
